Melbourne, FL (January 8, 2026) – Melbourne Orlando International Airport (MLB) started demolition of the Southside T-hangars, clearing the way for future development on the airfield. The hangars, which have been in use since the 1960s, are being removed to support new aviation infrastructure and continued growth at the airport.
This work will allow for future aviation improvements, including a planned satellite fixed base operator (FBO) that will serve aircraft operating at the Hyatt Place Melbourne Airport hotel located on airport property. Fly-in hotels are rare nationwide and especially uncommon at commercial service airports, making this development a unique asset for the Space Coast.
“This project represents the next step in modernizing our airport while honoring its history,” said Greg Donovan, A.A.E., MLB executive director. “These hangars served generations of pilots for more than six decades. Their removal allows us to create new infrastructure that supports growth, enhances service offerings, and strengthens MLB’s position as a unique aviation destination.”
Donovan officially kicked off the demolition by getting behind the controls of an excavator to begin removal of the T-hangars.
The project is being completed by Advanced Demolition, LLC of Casselberry, Florida, and includes removal of six aging T-hangar buildings and associated foundations. Work is expected to be completed within approximately one month. Once demolition is complete, the Airport will move forward with bidding for a newly designed apron area to support the future satellite FBO and related aviation operations serving the Hyatt Place.
The Hyatt Place Melbourne Airport has become a unique addition to the airport campus, offering direct airfield access, an easy walk to the terminal, and the Runway Rooftop Bar & Grill with up-close views of the runways. The planned future satellite FBO will further enhance the experience for general aviation pilots and passengers while supporting continued aviation activity at MLB.
