MELBOURNE, Fla. (April 20, 2010) — Melbourne International Airport officials expected great things with the much-anticipated return of US Airways, and it didn’t take long for those expectations to be met.
In its first full month of operations, US Airways contributed heavily to a whopping 75 percent increase in passenger traffic in March, compared with the same month last year.
“The increase year over year is truly remarkable,” said airport Executive Director Richard Ennis, CPFO. “Providing Space Coast residents and visitors with additional travel options makes a huge difference. It bodes well for our local economy.”
Ennis attributes the boost to US Airways new service, Delta Air Lines’ increased capacity and the airport’s aggressive marketing campaigns, which were implemented starting in late 2009.
In March, 41,725 passengers flew to and from Melbourne International Airport. That compared with 23,819 travelers in March 2009. It was the first full month of US Airways flights since the airline resumed operations in Melbourne on Feb. 12. The airline now offers three flights daily between Melbourne and its hub at Charlotte Douglas International Airport in Charlotte, N.C.
Overall, passenger traffic at the airport through the first three months of 2010 was up 34 percent compared with the first quarter of 2009, with more than 83,000 passengers flying to and from Melbourne.
Clearly, travelers are embracing the new service, Ennis said, adding that the increased traffic reflects not only the attractiveness of the Space Coast as a vacation destination but also an overall improvement in the travel industry.
